Loving v. Virginia

We recognize that there was a time in the United States when people who loved each other and wanted to build a life together did not have that right. More recent than that, it wasn’t until five years ago that the Marriage Equality Act became the law of the land. We have strong feelings about justice, equity, and freedom. We imagine that the Lovings felt similarly about love and justice.

Loving vVirginia, 388 U.S. 1, was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court that struck down laws banning interracial marriage as a violation of the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

We planned to get married on June 12, 2021. The pandemic created some challenges, but couldn’t stop our love! While we are celebrating on June 11th, we will be signing our marriage license on Sunday, June 12 to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Loving v. Virginia decision.

While we are excited to celebrate, we feel it is necessary to acknowledge that the United States has not always been a country that has supported the marriage you will witness at our wedding.
